They need more protein than others for three basic reasons. First, for the rebuilding of body tissues, second, for when their diet lacks efficient carbohydrates and third, for the building and strengthening of muscles. Consequently, despite the numerous accusations that athletes do not require more protein than the average person, it is evident from, these three reasons that they do.

Do Athletes Need More Protein?

The first reason that athletes need more protein than the average person is for the rebuilding of broken tissue. When athletes work out they are constantly tarring tissues. When tissues are torn it allows new muscle to be built upon. Because they are tarring tissues every day, unlike the average person, they need more protein so that their body can heal and build muscles. For example, when I was running track I would run three miles a week and do lots of leg exercises. I was not getting enough protein in my diet and I was always sore. I felt like I had pulled every muscles in my leg and I was weak. When I went to the doctor they told me I was not eating enough proteins and not eating the correct nutritious foods and that is why I felt the way I did. Sure enough, I started eating more protein and even taking vitamins and in the time frame of about two weeks I felt stronger and not as weak; I even ran faster. This experience evidently shows that athletes need more protein.

The second reason athletes’ need more protein is because they burn off carbohydrates quicker because of all the exercising. This leaves them with a lack of carbohydrates. Protein can be used as fuel to build that back up and to get the person going. As I mentioned before, I was running track and I was feeling weak and after I started putting more protein in my diet I started feeling stronger and not being so tired. This is the second reason why athletes need more protein.

Thirdly, athletes need more protein because it helps build stronger muscles. I am not saying that the average person should not have strong muscles, but athletes do need stronger muscles because their bodies have to do rigorous tasks. For example, football players have to jump and leap and get tackled. Gymnast need to flip and have good upper and lower body strength to hold themselves up. Therefore, their muscles need to be stronger and protein along with some other things helps that.
